Binge Drinking Effects

Being only 24 years old I have had my fair share of drunken/ binge drinking nights, but I have never looked into the effects it does on my body. Most people pre-drink before going out to save money, to help them become more social or just because everyone else is doing it, but by pre-drinking you are putting your body into overdrive by consuming a large amount of alcohol within a short amount of time and then continuing to do so till the early hours of the morning.

The short term effect of binge drinking:

Slurred speech, Drowsiness, Vomiting, Upset stomach, Headaches, Poor balance, Breathing difficulties. Distorted vision and hearing, impaired judgment, Decreased perception and coordination, Unconsciousness, Depression, Anger and Blackouts.

We’ve all been there, not being able to stand, vomiting before and after, making the wrong decisions, waking up and not remembering the night, yet we all still seem eager to do it all over again or at least once the pounding headache stops.

Long term Effects

Skin Damage

Sun damages your skin with UV rays but alcohol not only dehydrates and strip your skin of natural oils, leaving it dry, cracked an pealing but it causes flushing of the cheeks that can lead to permanent damage. Alcohol causes tiny facial blood vessels called capillaries to dilate and carry more blood to the surface, this can cause the capillaries to burst, leave permanent damage to your face. Binge drinking can make your face suffer a dull, gray pallor which can last for days after drinking as well cause bloodshot eyes.

Weight Gain

The word most women hate hearing. Drinking your calories is one of the many causes of weight gain but the consequence of binge drinking is rapid weight gain. Every every ounce of alcohol you drink, you are consuming between 100-200 empty calories, that doesn’t include the soda, juice or other flavourings you add to your drink. If you drink about three drinks, that is still around 600 calories, but if your binge drinking and have around 5 drinks, that is over 1,000 calories.

Infertility

A large number of ovulatory dysfunctions are associated with alcohol. It can affect fertility by interfering with ovulation and menstruation in women and its affects sperm count and motility in men. Alcohol affects the body’s ability to produce the amino acids necessary for cell development which is critical to reproduce. The negative effects of alcohol can extend to the fetus causing impaired growth and development.

Women v. Men

Women are affected more by alcohol then men. We have smaller frames, more body fat and less ability to process alcohol out of our systems. Women are more prone to liver disease, breast cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, pancreatitis and even death which are just some of the major effects of binge

drinking. The amount a woman can safely drink depends on weight, health, personal genetic, family history, the time she last ate and age.

Conclusion

Know your limits and if you are not sure of your limits stick to one type of alcohol instead of mixing, drink slower and for every drink have a glass of water to keep you hydrated.

Whether it’s girls night, a birthday, a friend comes to town, have fun but drink in moderation and be smart.
